Mount Pleasant Colliery 1861 - 1955

The Mount Pleasant Colliery was opened in June 1861 by Messrs Patrick Lahiff and Fawcett. It was located approximately one kilometre south of Parish Avenue.

In 1862 a tramway was built from the mine to Wollongong Harbour. Remnants of the line have survived, including the cutting at North Wollongong beach.

In 1889 the company built a coke works just east of the rail overhead bridge at North Wollongong. Various tunnels were opened, and in 1886 North Mount Pleasant was opened 2.4 kilometres north of the original site.

In 1937 the mine was taken over by AIS and the tramway was demolished. Production recommenced in 1950, but the colliery finally closed in 1955.

The mine was the site of some ingenious engineering to capture the energy generated by the main incline haulage to power the underground endless rope systems.
